Cozier Frederick // Minister of Environment, Rural Modernization & Kalinago Upliftment

New Land: The Kalinago Dream unfolds around the lives of two Kalinago men, Honorable Minister Cozier Frederick as the first representative of the Kalinago in the Dominica national government, and Mr. Lorenzo Sanford as the youngest elected chief of the Kalinago Territory. It chronicles their stories as they work to safeguard and celebrate their history and culture and that of the larger Dominican story in a changing political, environmental and social landscape.

Striving Beyond Resilience in a Challenging Environment

The effects of climate change on the island of Dominica manifested itself in the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017. The Kalinago Territory and its people were severely impacted, but with the help of Minister Frederick and others, the Kalinago are exploring ways to create a “new land” as they walk in the footsteps of their ancestors into a more sustainable future while still maintaining the integrity of their cultural landscape. They endeavour to not just be resilient but to strive in their ancestral lands.

Safeguarding the Kalinago Territory

Dominica is known as Waitukubuli, its Kalinago name meaning “Tall is Her Body.” This is the story of the last remaining Indigenous people in the Lesser Antilles who have lived in the protected community of the Kalinago Territory for generations. New Land chronicles the stories of resistance, resilience, survival and celebration of the Kalinago Territory that are told in their own voices and from their perspectives. It is their story of safeguarding the Kalinago Territory for generations to come.

History & Colonization

For 500 years we have been hearing about the myth of the extinction of the Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean. Despite the harrowing experience of European invasion and colonialism beginning with Christopher Columbus, the Kalinago have survived these destructive genocidal attempts and are still here today celebrating their history and culture.
